Motorcycle theory test

What is the Theory Test

The theory test needs to be taken before your practical tests. It consists of two sections, the theory section and the hazard perception test.

When you attend your theory test you must take with you your driving licence. If you do not have the new style two part licence with your photographic identity card section, in addition you must take with you a valid passport.

The Theory Test is taken under exam conditions and you are given 57 minutes to complete it. The test is taken on a touch screen computer and no previous computer experience is needed, so there is no need to worry. You will have up to 15 minutes to get used to the system before starting your test and there are staff available to help you if needed. The screens are easy to read and only one question will appear on the screen at a time. You will be able to move forwards or backwards through the questions at any time to look at them again to complete or to alter your answer. The screen will display a message if you have not completed your answer fully.

Candidates with special needs will have additional time and assistance - e.g. hearing the written text through a headset. The test is also available in 15 other languages.

The theory section consists of multiple choice questions where you will be asked to identify the correct answer from a choice of four or five possible options. There will also be some questions requiring more than one answer from five or more options. Some of the questions will contain pictures of road signs or road situations.

To pass the test you will need to answer at least 43 out of 50 questions correctly.

THE HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST

Research has shown that the more experienced riders and drivers scan the road better and recognise much earlier the clues that show a hazardous situation is developing and therefore start to take action before the danger occurs.

The Hazard Perception Test is taken at the same time as the Theory Test and takes about an extra 15 minutes.

During the test a number of film clips are shown from a drivers point of view. Each clip contains one or more developing hazards.

You will be asked to indicate as soon as you see a hazard developing which may result in taking some action, such as changing speed or direction. The sooner a response is made, by clicking the mouse, the higher the score.

The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75.
